I think it’s so nice when my children like coming in to the kitchen to create something independently. Easier for Charlie as he is older but this recipe is definitely something younger children can do also.

We seem to have loads of left over puff pastry this time of year and I hate chucking it away.

These little candy canes are so quick and great for all those bits you don’t know what to do with.

I can give poppy a rolling pin and pastry and she is happy for hours.

2 sheets of rolled puff pastry

3 tablespoon strawberry jam

Egg to glaze

Icing sugar for dusting

Lay one sheet of pastry down and spread jam all over

Place the other piece of pastry on top

Cut vertical strips about 2 cm wide

Once cut grab each sandwiches strip and twist between your hands like you are twiddling your hair

Bend it to form a cane shape

Wash with egg yolk (optimal)

Bake in the oven for 15 mins until puffed and golden

Once cool dust with icing sugar
